PRESSURE BELTS
PRESSURE BELTS
On the earth’s surface, there are seven pressure belts. They are the Equatorial Low, the two Subtropical highs, the two Subpolar lows, and the two Polar highs. Except for the Equatorial low, the others form matching pairs in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. There is a pattern of alternate high and low-pressure belts over the earth. This is due to the spherical shape of the earth—different parts of the earth are heated unequally.
Pressure Belts:
★Equatorial Low Pressure: Due to intense heating.
★Subtropical High Pressure: Dry zones at ~30° latitude.
★Subpolar Low Pressure: Rising air near poles.
★Polar High Pressure: Cold, descending air at poles.
★Wind Systems:Trade Winds: Blow from subtropical highs to equator.
★Westerlies: Move from subtropical highs to subpolar lows.
★Polar Easterlies: Blow from polar highs to subpolar lows.
★Jet Streams: High-speed winds in the upper atmosphere
General circulation refers to the large-scale movement of the atmosphere.Driven by solar radiation and Earth's rotation
★Components
Trade winds (equatorial region)
Westerlies (mid-latitudes)
Jet stream (high-altitude winds)
Polar easterlies (polar regions)
★Cells
Hadley cell (equatorial region)
Ferrel cell (mid-latitudes)
Polar cell (polar regions)
★Features
High-pressure belts (equatorial and mid-latitudes Low-pressure belts (polar regions) Wind patterns (trade winds, westerlies, etc.) Global wind patterns (jet stream, etc.) ImportanceInfluences climate and weather patterns Affects ocean currents and global heat transfer Impacts Avanti and navigation

WORLD GEOGRAPHY CLIMATOLOGY THEORY +MCQs
CLIMATOLOGY
Climatology is the scientific study of climates and their phenomena over a long period.Importance: Understanding weather patterns,
agriculture, disaster management, and global climate change.
★ COMPONENTS:
Atmosphere structure and composition Insolation and temperature distribution Pressure systems and winds Precipitation types Climate classifications
Structure of the Atmosphere
★Troposphere:
Closest to Earth (up to ~12 km).
Weather phenomena occur here.
Temperature decreases with altitude.
★ Stratosphere:
Contains the ozone layer (absorbs UV radiation). Temperature increases with altitude.
★ Mesosphere: Meteors burn here.
Temperature decreases with altitude.
★ Thermosphere:
Aurora formation zone. Contains the ionosphere (aids in radio communication).
★ Exosphere:
Outermost layer, merges with space
★ Insolation: Solar radiation received by Earth.
★Factors: Latitude, Earth's tilt, and atmospheric conditions.
★ Heat Zones of Earth:
Torrid Zone: Near equator; receives direct sunlight.
★ Temperate Zones: Moderate temperatures.
★ Frigid Zones: Cold regions near poles.
★ Temperature Distribution:
Affected by altitude, ocean currents, and land-sea
distribution
